Ohio SchoolNet Statewide Initiatives
Ohio Educational Technology Agencies serve Ohio's K-12 schools and assist educators in meeting and exceeding state performance standards. One of the agencies' first major programs to utilize internet technologies was Inquire Ohio, in 1997.As webmaster for these programs, it was my job to design the program websites and integrate new media in such a way as to facilitate collaboration between students, teachers, program administrators, and the community.
Educational Applications Developer
The success of Inquire Ohio made it clear that there was enthusiam within the educational community for a more classroom-centric approach to online outreach. Top-down web applications like Blackboard were becoming more widely adopted, but were designed from a school/district
administrative perspective. After a series of focus group meetings with teachers, parents, and students, I designed and developed WGTE's
Build Your Own Website™ (BYOW) content management system. Over time, several more applications were developed and integrated into the original BYOW plan.
Workshop Facilitator
Teaching professional development workshops became one of my primary duties at WGTE Public Media after the release of the Build Your Own Website™ online classroom application. Originally offered exclusively to K-12 school teachers, these workshops were later widened to include administrators, students, educational resource specialists, and other memebers of the educational community.
Javascript Instructor
In 2002 I accepted a part-time position as a Javascript instructor at Stautzenberger College, a two year technical college
located in Maumee, Ohio. Classes were held twice a week, in the evenings, and averaged 10-15 students per class. Many students were recent high school graduates,
though a considerable number were taking the class as part of a company-sponsored professional
development. (General Motors, in particular, sent a lot of employees through the Web Page Design Technician program at
Stautzenberger.) Very few of the recent high school graduates had ever taken any form of programming class prior to this course,
which added to the challenge
